ILOS Advisory Group has expertise on the legal and policy issues connected with the legal regime of straits which are used for international navigation, including issues of the right of passage and regime of transit, and the rights and obligations of coastal States. We are also in a position to provide advice on the specific status – under treaty, custom or historic rights – of some of these straits (such as the Straits of Gibraltar and Tiran), and on legal implications of actions taken by coastal or third States affecting the security or status of a strait.
